What are quiz answers?

When a shopper answers a quiz on your Instant AI sign-up form, Instant saves their answer to their profile. You can use that answer to change what a shopper sees in a flow email, or to start a separate flow for each answer.

Why you need them

  • Without a rule or a flow that uses the answer, every shopper in a flow sees the same content, whatever they told you on your form.
  • A quiz answer sits on the shopper’s profile, but no email uses it until you set one up.
  • To send a different sequence for each answer, you need a flow that starts from that answer.

How to set it up

Before you start

  • You need an Instant AI sign-up form with a quiz step. For how to add one, see Instant AI Sign-up Forms.
  • To start a separate flow from an answer (Option 2 below), custom flows must be turned on for your account. If you do not have custom flows, ask your customer success manager.

There are two ways to use quiz answers. You can use one or both.

  • Option 1: Show different content for each answer inside a flow you already send, such as your Welcome Flow.
  • Option 2: Start a separate flow for each answer.

Both options use a Shopify tag on each answer, so do Step 1 first.

Step 1: Add a Shopify tag to each answer

  1. Click Signup Form in the left menu of your Instant AI dashboard
  2. Open the Template tab
  3. Hover over your quiz step and click Edit step
  4. Click the Quiz block
  5. Open the first answer and add a Shopify tag (for example, quiz-sleep)
  6. Do the same for each other answer, with a different tag for each one
  7. Click Save changes
  8. Click Publish, then click Publish again in the Publish sign-up form window

Note: The tag names are your choice. The only requirement is that the tag on the answer is the same tag that you select in your Smart Rule or custom flow.

Option 1: Show different content for each answer

Use a Smart Rule to change a block in a flow email, so each answer sees its own copy, image or offer.

  1. Go to Email Templates in your Instant AI dashboard
  2. Select the flow and the email you want to change
  3. Click Edit Template
  4. Click the block you want to change
  5. In the block settings panel, under Smart Rules, click Add Smart Rule
  6. Click Create New Rule
  7. Click Add filter and select Shopify Tag
  8. Choose the tag for one answer
  9. Click Save & Apply
  10. Click the + under the rule and add the content for shoppers who gave that answer
  11. Click + Add rule and repeat steps 6 to 10 for each other answer
  12. Click Save Changes

Your original block moves into the Default version. Shoppers who did not take the quiz, or who match no rule, see the Default.

For the full Smart Rule steps, see How to use Smart Rules in your emails.

Option 2: Start a separate flow for each answer

Use a custom flow when an answer needs its own sequence of emails.

  1. Go to Flows in your Instant AI dashboard
  2. Scroll to the Custom section and click Create custom flow
  3. Give the flow a Name
  4. Set the Starting point to Shopify customer tags updated
  5. Choose the # of emails in the flow
  6. Set Send once per profile to On if you want each shopper to enter the flow only once
  7. Under Shopify tags, open Filter Conditions and choose Has Any
  8. Search for and select the tag for the answer
  9. Click Apply, then create the flow
  10. Add a 10 minute wait to the first email
  11. Add and edit the emails in the flow, then enable it

Tip: To send one flow to shoppers who gave any of several answers, select all of those tags in step 8. Then use a Smart Rule (Option 1) inside that flow to change the content for each answer.

How it works

Where a quiz answer is saved

  • Each answer saves to the shopper’s profile. The first quiz on your site saves to QUIZ_1, the next one to QUIZ_2, and so on.
  • If the answer has a Shopify tag, Instant also adds that tag to the shopper’s Shopify customer record.

Which version of a block a shopper sees

  • Instant checks the rules in a block from top to bottom, when the email sends.
  • The shopper sees the first rule they match.
  • If they match no rule, they see the Default version.
  • If the block has no Default, nothing shows in that spot. The rest of the email sends as normal.

When a custom flow starts

  • Instant reads a new Shopify tag within 1 to 2 minutes of it being added.
  • The 10 minute wait on the first email makes sure the tag has synced before the flow sends.
  • A custom flow runs alongside your other flows. A shopper who enters it still gets your Welcome Flow and any other flows or campaigns they qualify for.

FAQ

Do I have to use Shopify tags? For Smart Rules, no. You can use the Profile attributes filter and select QUIZ_1 instead of a tag. For a custom flow, yes, because custom flows start from Shopify customer tags.

A shopper answered the quiz but did not get my custom flow. Why? The most common reason is missing email marketing consent. The tag starts the flow, but the shopper gets no email unless their profile also has email marketing consent. Also check that the tag in the flow is the same as the tag on the answer.

What do shoppers who skipped the quiz see? They see the Default version of any block with a Smart Rule. If the block has no Default, nothing shows in that spot.

Can I use quiz answers in campaigns? Yes. Filter a campaign to shoppers with the tag, or add a Smart Rule to a campaign email in the same way as a flow email.

Can I use a quiz from a different form tool? Yes, if the tool adds a Shopify tag to the shopper for each answer. Use that tag in your Smart Rule or custom flow. If the form does not also grant email marketing consent, shoppers who enter the flow will not get email.
