If Instant is missing some of your past order history, or your customer order data does not look complete, it is usually because your Shopify connection is using an older set of permissions. Shopify has since updated these, so depending on when you onboarded to Instant, you may need to add one extra scope.
This scope lets Instant query your Shopify orders from further back than the last 60 days, so we can pull your customers’ full order history from all time. That history is what powers accurate segmentation and analytics.
The scope to add is read_all_orders. You are updating the Instant app you already have installed, so you do not need to reinstall Instant or create a new app.
To add the read_all_orders scope:
- In your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Apps and sales channels > Develop apps
- Click Build apps in Dev Dashboard. This opens the Shopify Dev Dashboard in a new tab
- Find the Instant app in the list and select it
- Click Versions > Create Version
- Under Scopes, leave the existing list exactly as it is and add
read_all_ordersto the end (for example, append,read_all_orders) - Click Release, then confirm Release again in the pop-up
- If Shopify prompts you to approve the updated permissions on your store, accept it to finalise
Once released, the new version becomes active and the updated scopes apply to the installed app.
Note: Only add
read_all_orders. Leave every other scope in the list as it is, so you do not remove access Instant already relies on.
Tip: After releasing, check that the Instant app still shows 1 install. This confirms the update applied to your store.
What happens next
Once the scope is in place, Instant can backfill your full order history. Your historical orders are pulled in behind the scenes, so there is nothing more for you to do after releasing the new version. Depending on your order volume, it can take some time for the full history and updated segment counts to appear.
FAQ
Why do I need to add this scope? Shopify only shares the last 60 days of orders under the standard scope. The read_all_orders scope is what gives Instant access to your full order history, which is needed for accurate segment counts and historical analytics.
Will this affect my store or my customers? No. The scope only changes what order data Instant can read. It does not change anything on your storefront and does not affect checkout.
Do I need to create a new app or reinstall Instant? No. You are adding one scope to the Instant app you already have installed.
What happens if I don’t add this scope? Instant will keep working, but it will only ever see your last 60 days of orders. Your segment counts and analytics will stay under-sized and will not reflect customers who ordered before that window, so any audiences or reporting that rely on full purchase history will be incomplete.
My segment counts still look low after I added the scope. What should I do? The backfill can take some time to complete, so give it a while first. If your counts still have not updated, contact support and we will check the backfill on our side.
I can’t find the Instant app in the Dev Dashboard. What should I do? Contact support and we will help you locate the app and confirm the scope is added correctly.
