Your welcome flow is usually where your most valuable discount goes out, so it is also where coupon abuse does the most damage. Instant AI decides coupon eligibility for every shopper individually, at the moment each email is sent, rather than handing the same code to everyone and hoping it does not leak. This means you can run a generous welcome offer without giving discounts to people who should not get one, and without codes circulating on deal sites.
This article explains the four ways coupon abuse usually happens and exactly how Instant AI handles each one, so you can set your welcome flow live with confidence.
How Instant AI optimises your welcome flow coupons
Instead of policing coupons manually, Instant AI applies its own logic to every send. The core principle is that eligibility is decided per shopper, per email, not once at signup. By default, we provide our protections work together:
- Each code is unique to the shopper and single-use
- Each code expires automatically once the series is over
- Coupons are stripped from anyone who has ever ordered from you
- Re-entry and send frequency are controlled by built-in cooldowns
Options such as reusing coupon codes or coupon codes that don’t expire are available as optional settings in our coupon configuration however aren’t enabled by default to provide the best configuration by default.
“Won’t my discount code end up on a deal site?”
By default, every shopper who qualifies for a welcome coupon receives their own unique code. These codes are randomly generated, checked against your Shopify discounts so no two shoppers ever share one, and set to single use. Once a code has been redeemed once, it is dead. A shopper cannot post their code to a coupon forum and have hundreds of strangers redeem it, because the second person to try will find it already used.
If you would rather run one shared code for everyone (for example, a memorable campaign code), you can choose that instead. When you create a coupon in Settings > Coupons, the setup wizard lets you pick the code type. A shared code can be redeemed multiple times, so this is the trade-off: choose unique codes for the tightest control, or a shared code for simplicity.
“What stops an old code being redeemed weeks later?”
Welcome coupons are time-boxed automatically. Each code stays valid for the length of the welcome series plus a short buffer, then expires at the end of that day. You do not set a fixed number of days yourself. Instant AI sizes the window to your flow, so the code lives just long enough for the shopper to use it while they are engaged, and expires soon after the last email in the series has sent.
Because the window is tied to the flow rather than a static date, a code that escapes onto another site becomes worthless within days rather than lingering indefinitely. If you select an existing Shopify discount without an expiry, then this will apply instead of Instant’s expiry date.
“A customer subscribed while placing their first order. I don’t want to give them a welcome discount.”
Before sending a welcome email with a coupon, Instant AI checks the shopper’s full Shopify order history. If they have ever placed an order with you, the welcome email still sends, but the coupon is removed.
This covers the exact case where a large share of new subscribers are people who just bought something and got added to your list at checkout. You do not want to hand those shoppers a discount, and you do not have to remember to exclude them.
“Someone unsubscribes and resubscribes to farm the code.”
Instant AI closes this loophole through a combination of checks automatically so that you don’t have to:
- The order-history check above still applies, so any resubscriber who has bought from you gets the welcome email with no coupon
- The welcome series only sends once per shopper profile, so a profile that has already been through the welcome flow will not run through it again and pick up a fresh code
“I need control over when the series can send again.”
Instant AI has built-in cooldowns so shoppers are not bombarded or re-enrolled too soon:
- A shopper cannot receive more than one welcome email within a 24 hour window
- Once a shopper has completed a flow, they will not be re-enrolled into that flow group for 7 days
- A completed purchase stops any in-progress welcome enrolment, so someone who buys mid-series stops receiving the rest
Because eligibility is decided per shopper at send time, Instant AI lets genuine new signups into the welcome flow and then decides coupon eligibility individually, rather than relying only on a blunt re-entry timer. In practice this is tighter control over who gets a discount, not looser.
FAQ
Do all shoppers get a unique code? Yes, by default. Every shopper who qualifies for a welcome coupon receives their own single-use code. You can switch to a single shared code if you prefer, but shared codes can be redeemed more than once.
How long is a welcome coupon valid for? The window is set automatically based on the length of your welcome series plus a short buffer, then the code expires at the end of that day. You can also set your own end date, and Instant AI will use whichever comes first.
When does the discount first appear? In the welcome flow, the coupon is included from the very first email, which sends immediately after signup, and it carries through every following email in the series, as long as the shopper is eligible.
What happens if someone has already bought from me? They still receive the welcome email, but the coupon is removed. Instant AI checks whether they have any order on record in Shopify, including orders later cancelled or refunded, not just recent ones.
Can someone get a second welcome coupon by unsubscribing and resubscribing? No. The welcome series sends only once per profile, and anyone who has any order on record has their coupon stripped regardless of subscription status. If you have Klaviyo connected, shoppers who already existed in your Klaviyo account and were subscribed there before the flow started are suppressed from the welcome email.
Can I use my own Shopify discount instead of an automatically generated one? Yes. You can connect an existing Shopify discount in Settings > Coupons, and Instant AI will still generate unique single-use codes per shopper while respecting your discount’s rules and exclusions.
