Uninstalling the pixel from your site

Instant AI connects to your store in more than one place: your Instant AI dashboard, your Shopify store, your theme code and your DNS. To remove Instant AI fully, remove it from each place in the order below.

When you finish, Instant AI stops sending emails to your shoppers and stops tracking activity on your website.

Note: Contact your account manager or [email protected] before you remove Instant AI. If you remove it without talking to us first, problems can occur with your account.

Before you start

Note: Removing Instant AI from your site does not cancel your billing. To cancel, contact your account manager directly or email [email protected].

  • Make sure you have Shopify admin access, or staff permissions for Develop apps and Manage and install apps.
  • Make sure you can log in to your DNS provider (for example GoDaddy, Cloudflare or Shopify).
  • If you want a copy of your shoppers, export them first. See How to export your Shoppers list.
  • Make a backup of your theme. In Shopify, go to Online Store > Themes, click the ⋯ menu on your live theme and select Duplicate.
  • If you want your abandonment and welcome emails to continue without a gap, set them up in your new email platform before you start.

How to remove Instant AI

Step 1: Turn off your flows, campaigns and sign-up form

  1. Go to AI Flows in your Instant AI dashboard.
  2. Toggle off each flow that is on.
  3. Go to your campaigns. For each scheduled campaign, select Edit Campaign, then Pause and Edit.
  4. Click Signup Form in the left menu.
  5. Click Unpublish to take your form off your site.

Step 2: Delete the Instant pixel from Shopify Customer Events

  1. In Shopify, go to Settings > Customer events.
  2. Find the custom pixel named Instant.
  3. Click the ⋯ menu and select Disconnect.
  4. Click the ⋯ menu again and select Delete.
  5. Click Confirm.

Step 3: Remove the Instant pixel from your theme code

  1. In Shopify, go to Online Store > Themes.
  2. Click the ⋯ menu on your live theme and select Edit code.
  3. Open layout/theme.liquid.
  4. Search for cdn.instant.one.
  5. Delete the whole <script> block that contains it, from <script> to </script>.
  6. Search for InstantConfig and InstantJS, and delete any other <script> blocks that contain them.
  7. Click Save.
  8. Repeat these steps for your other themes, including unpublished ones.

Note: If you publish an old theme that still has the Instant script in it, tracking starts again. Check every theme, not only your live one.

If your store is not yet on Shopify Checkout Extensibility, also open layout/checkout.liquid, delete the <script> block that contains cdn.instant.one, and click Save.

Step 4: Uninstall the Instant app from Shopify

This step removes Instant AI’s access to your store data.

  1. In Shopify, go to Settings > Apps and sales channels > Develop apps.
  2. Find the app named Instant or Instant App. On some stores, you need to click Build apps in Dev Dashboard to see it.
  3. Open the app.
  4. On the Overview tab, click Uninstall app.
  5. Click Confirm.

If you installed Instant from the Shopify App Store, go to Settings > Apps instead, click the ⋯ menu next to Instant and select Uninstall.

Step 5: Remove Instant code from Google Tag Manager or custom code

Skip this step unless you or your developer added Instant code outside of Shopify.

Google Tag Manager

  1. Open your container in Google Tag Manager.
  2. Go to Tags and delete the Custom HTML tag that loads cdn.instant.one/instant.js.
  3. Delete any Custom HTML tags that contain InstantJS.track.
  4. Delete the triggers and the raw_event variable you created for Instant. Keep any that other tags use.
  5. Click Submit, then Publish.

Headless or custom storefront

  1. Search your codebase for cdn.instant.one, InstantConfig and InstantJS.
  2. Delete the Instant pixel script.
  3. Delete every window.InstantJS.track(...) call.
  4. If you added cdn.instant.one or m.instant.one to your Content Security Policy, remove them.
  5. Deploy your site.

Step 6: Remove Instant AI records from your DNS

Instant AI added records to your DNS so it could send email from a subdomain of your domain, such as send.yourbrand.com or mail.yourbrand.com. If you set up an event tracking domain, it also added a tracking subdomain, such as inst-tk.yourstore.com.

  1. Log in to your DNS provider.
  2. Find the CNAME and TXT records you added for Instant AI. You can see the full list under Configuration > Domain in your Instant AI dashboard.
  3. Delete those records.
  4. If you set up an event tracking domain, delete the record for your tracking subdomain. You can see it under Configuration > Domain > Event tracking domain > ⋯ > View DNS records in your Instant AI dashboard.

Note: Only delete the records Instant AI gave you. Records for other email platforms or Google Workspace sit on different subdomains and keep working.

If you connected your DNS automatically, still check that the records are gone. Delete any that remain.

How to check Instant AI is removed

Open your store in a private browser window, then:

  1. Open your home page, a product page and your cart.
  2. Right-click the page and select Inspect.
  3. In the Elements tab, search for cdn.instant.one, InstantConfig and InstantJS. There should be no results.
  4. In the Network tab, reload the page and filter for instant. There should be no requests to cdn.instant.one or m.instant.one.
  5. In the Console tab, type window.InstantJS and press Enter. The result should be undefined.
  6. In Shopify, go to Settings > Customer events. The Instant pixel should not be in the list.
  7. Check that the Instant sign-up form no longer shows on your site.

FAQ

Do I need to do every step? Yes, except Step 5, which only applies if you added Instant code outside of Shopify. Each step removes a different connection, so skipping one leaves part of Instant AI on your site.

What happens to emails that are already scheduled? Flow emails stop once you toggle off your flows. A campaign that has already started sending can’t be recalled, so pause your scheduled campaigns first.

Will removing the DNS records affect my other email platforms? No. Instant AI only added new records on its own subdomain. It did not edit or replace any records your other platforms use.

Does removing Instant AI cancel my billing? No. Removing Instant AI from your site does not cancel your billing. Contact your account manager directly or email [email protected] to cancel.

I found Instant code I can’t remove. What should I do? Contact us at [email protected] with your store URL and a screenshot of the code.
